5 Tips to Keep Your Brain Healthy

Next Avenue's Daily Roadmap blog last week featured 5 ways to charge your brain's neurons and lower the risk for disease. 

Brain game's such as Luminosity, crosswords, and Sudoku benefits can be considered debatable

AARP conducted a survey on 1,200 Americans over the age of 34 about the importance of brain health and how to improve their brain health. 

The survey found that 93 percent of respondents said it was very important or extremely important. But, the survey's surprise was that only 18% offered socializing with family or friends as one of the top 3 ways to improve brain health. 

So, how are you supposed to exercise your brain properly?

Lynn Mento with AARP offered these suggestions:

  • Keep Fit

Exercise is very very important.

Mento says: "The brain absorbs 20 percent of the oxygen in your blood, so it's a hungry little beast". Staying active through midlife can be associated with a reduced risk of Alzheimer's and dementia. 

  • Watch Your Stress

Chronic stress can cause an increase in one's risk of Alzheimer's disease.

Even just five minutes of meditation helps, or hatha yoga" Mento says. 

  • Eat Right

"What is good for body is also good for your brain" Omega-3 fatty acid rich foods like salmon and walnuts are very brain healthy. 

  • Exercise Your Brain

Don't look at this as solving puzzles but by using your brain in new and unique ways.
